    • Toyota shares MKV Supra exhaust sound clips calling BMW's B58 'legendary'

This is amusing and kind of sad at the same time. Toyota is marketing the MKV Supra as having a historical link to their inline-6. That is fine except of course the motor is not Toyota's but BMW's. Calling the 3.0 liter 'legendary' when it is not even their own design is awkward at best.

Surprisingly, unlike the majority of modern 3.0 liter turbo I6 BMW powerplants the B58 in the Supra sounds pretty good.

We will get the full reveal next month in Detroit, 1-14-19.

The B58's sound is the one thing I miss after moving from my 340i to my current F80 M3. That really is a nice engine but I agree, Toyota calling it legendary in their marketing is pretty funny.

The B58 is a contemporary engine with unmatched efficiency. It is not "embarrassing" at all for Toyota to contract for the best contemporary I6 which is a design they no longer produce. The drive train, chassis and interior accessories that come with it are just extra bonuses.

I think it's kind of pathetic they are reskinning a Z4 and did not even bother to build their own I6.

That isn't honoring the Supra legacy. It's pissing all over it.

I think the B58 is the best sounding straight 6 BMW motor on the market right now. That Supra sounds great and I'm sure it's going to be fun to drive. I'm curious to know how the Toyota fan boys feel about the B58 engine lol.

They have more of a problem with the partnership in general than the motor itself.

LOL, what a turn around. It use to be guys installing Supra engines in their BMWs. Now it is the other way around, except it is the maufacturer.

Remember when everyone was doing 2JZ swaps? Now Toyota themselves is doing BMW swaps into the Supra.

I had an n54 135i for a few years and loved it. Although it made me miss my Supra. I now have a couple of supras for play, and price permitting will change my Golf R company car for an MKV Supra. So in answer to your question, this Toyota Fan Boy doesn't mind a BMW/Toyota. If we get the luxury of a BMW and development of the b58 and the styling of Toyota along with the renowned Toyota reliability, I for one can't wait.

I can't tell you if it's a Supra or not yet as I haven't driven onenor own one yet. A Supra is more than just being a Toyota. Driving a Supra is about the experience. It's about the drive and the experience of owning one. It's why people love the 6speed manual even though a high power Supra performs better with an auto. It's why people modify the stock suspension with the gixxer drew mod, about opening up the havoc and changing the crappy green bulbs, the scouring the second hand market for the rare OEM options even though they are often terrible, the looks you get from random strangers when you are driving it, the strangers that walk up to you and talk to you about your car, and all those other little things tweaks and mods and occurences. I would agree it's not entirely a Toyota, but as to it being a Supra, that is yet to be determined. Hmmmm I definitely got a little excited there just thinking about my supras at home on the garage. But that too is part of owning a Supra

No, I've made that determination and it was made when the reskinned a Z4 and used a BMW powerplant.

Should probably be happy we get a RWD powerful coupe instead of a FWD ecobox. I feel bad for owners stuck with a BMW they need to get serviced at a Toyota dealership.
